MTN MoMo Ghana: fees, wallet limits and the suspended bank-transfer charge

An accurate MoMo cost comparison begins with the transaction you intend to make. Funding a wallet, sending money, paying a bill and withdrawing cash are different operations. This Ghana-specific guide separates those operations, explains limit terminology and records an important 2026 fee announcement that must not be mistaken for an active charge.

Identify the Ghanaian product

MTN Ghana’s official MoMo page describes wallet funding, cash withdrawal and bill-payment services, and advertises no monthly account fee. That statement does not mean every transaction is free. It also does not establish the tariff for another country using the MoMo name. Keep the currency as Ghana cedis and confirm that the recipient is on the intended Ghanaian service. When a comparison site displays a tariff without a country or operation, it is not enough to calculate what this transfer will cost. Use the provider’s confirmation screen before authorising the payment.

Do not turn a proposed fee into a current tariff

The Bank of Ghana’s26 May 2026 release suspended the proposed 0.75% fee on direct wallet-to-bank transfers, which had been scheduled for 1 June 2026, pending further consultation. The official indexed release was located during this review, although its direct PDF retrieval timed out. Therefore this guide does not present that proposal as an active 23 October tariff. A message announcing a future charge and a later regulatory suspension must be read together. If a current transaction displays a fee, ask the provider to identify its applicable tariff and effective date rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Work out the complete cost before confirming

Write down the amount the recipient needs, the transfer fee displayed and any separate cash-withdrawal cost the recipient expects to incur. These amounts answer different questions. A sender can complete a transfer while the recipient still has to pay to obtain physical cash. For illustration, if a payment requires GHS 200 and a hypothetical service displays a GHS 2 charge, the total debit is GHS 202; this is arithmetic, not an MTN tariff. Avoid splitting a payment merely to bypass a limit. It can produce extra fees, incomplete records and additional compliance checks.

Use an agent without surrendering control

At an authorised outlet, confirm the transaction type and amount before handing over cash or approving a debit. Enter your own PIN privately. An agent may explain the menu, but does not need your secret code to operate their side of a legitimate transaction. Check your wallet record before leaving, especially if an SMS is delayed. For a withdrawal, verify the cash received against the completed transaction rather than accepting a verbal assurance. If connectivity fails, establish whether the first instruction completed before trying again so the same payment is not made twice.

Resolve a problem with a usable evidence trail

A useful support request identifies the date, amount, transaction reference, sender and intended recipient, while keeping the PIN and OTP out of the message. Explain whether the problem is a wrong recipient, duplicate debit, undisclosed charge or missing credit. Ask for a case reference and retain the response. The Bank of Ghana publishes a complaints route for issues involving regulated financial services, including unexpected charges and account disputes. Escalation is a process for investigation, not a guarantee that every mistaken payment can be reversed immediately.

MoMo transaction checklist

  • Confirm Ghana, Ghana cedis and the intended service.
  • Select the correct operation: transfer, bill payment or withdrawal.
  • Read the recipient name and total debit.
  • Check both account balance and transaction allowances.
  • Keep PINs and OTPs private.
  • Save the completed transaction reference.
  • Use the provider’s official support before repeating a disputed payment.

For recurring costs, keep a small dated log of the fee actually displayed. It helps distinguish a new charge from a change in transaction type. An old tariff poster is useful evidence of what was advertised then, but should not silently override a newer official notice.

Frequently asked questions

Was the proposed 0.75% fee automatically effective on 1 June 2026?

No. The Bank of Ghana’s 26 May notice suspended the proposal pending consultation. This guide does not certify that proposal as an active tariff.

Is the wallet balance cap the daily transfer limit?

No. One limits money held at a time; the other limits activity over a period. Both can affect a transaction.

Does no monthly fee mean no transaction charges?

No. Account maintenance and individual transfer, withdrawal or other service charges are different categories.
